Default Shifting 1st to 4th gear...what is the reason for it?

I really hate having to look at my RPM's all the time to see if I need to shift from 1st to 4th gear. I think 1>4 only shows up between 2000 and 2500 RPM's. When did they start doing this and why? It just seems more of annoyance then anything.

I've heard it can mess up the tran if you don't go to 4th. Seems hard to believe

It was this neat little engineering trick or about $1800 in gas guzzler tax. And just think where that $1800 would have gone. To those dumb *** politicians to spend as they see fit.

You should thank your lucky stars GM engineers came up with this trick. Personally, anything to keep my hard earned money from politicians is just fine by me.

Not true. A lot of bypass kits have been installed and running the roads every day. No issues with mine at all. A great $20 mod.

If you are tuning the car, it can be bypassed with the tune . No need for a bypass kit.

If you don't have a skip shift bypass (or a tune) installed, forcing the transmission into second when the skip shift is activated, will damage the transmission.

The CAGS skip shift eliminator is a must have. I waited several months before installing mine, then wondered why I waited?
It's easy to install, but just be aware there is more than one wiring harness to the tranny. If I remember right, there are three!
Make sure you are installing it on the right one. At first I thought it was the wrong type of plug, till I realized I was trying to install it on the wrong connector.
$ for mod, it is the best money ever spent on any car mod I've done.

From the owner's manual.

One to Four Shift Light

When this light comes on,
you can only shift from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4)
instead of FIRST (1) to
SECOND (2).
You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn
off this feature. This helps you get the best possible
fuel economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a
lower gear if you prefer.
Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except
FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes
on may damage the transmission. Shift only from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on.

This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• you are 21 percent throttle or less.

Default 1 to 4

I have had automatics and manuals. When I had the manuals some had the cags and some didnt. On those that didnt I went to 4th and without letting the clutch out went straight into 3rd. 3rd gave me the needed power where 4th did not...

If it annoys you at all, you should get the CAGS eliminator and install it and be done with it. It will be the best $20 you spend on the car. I put one on my car within a week of picking it up. Never have to worry about it now.

I have had 2 C6's and driven them since 2004 and have never once found this to be a problem. Just goose it up a few RPM and you can go right into second.

Even the Viper has skip shift but it did not avoid the gas guzzler tax because it still guzzled gas at 20 mpg tops.
