CHP dis on rectangular ports?
Just got around to reading the CHP article last nite on the oval port vs. rectangular port heads. The ovals trounced the rect. ports in their test. I was like "this aint right". I think they dissed the rects. by using that teeny-weeny cam. I think the duration on it was 224 @ .050". Why would they turn a oval port testimonial into a rect port vs. oval port contest. I mean, they didn't give the rect ports a fair shake. They should have had another test of both sets of heads with a bigger cam, which would have woke up the rect ports. Then they could have tested the streetability of the rect ports w/big cam in the camaro they're gonna use as a test mule. THAT would have been meaningful.

I agree 100% the test was complete BS. Anyone who would think about rect. ports would uses a cam with more duration and build a morots to spin past 6Krpms. And what was with that compression ratio????

i think the point they were trying to make was that rect ports don't make a lot of sense for the average street BB. they never said they weren't good for exotic or drag applications. IMO, they aren't really very fit for the street anyway.

If you read between the lines on these types of articles, you notice that they're saying the same thing as many on the forum have said in the past.
For a mild cruiser, use the oval ports. nice low end and good power to 5K or so, depending on the cam. No fuss, no muss.
Wanta' go like h***? get the rec ports, a big 'ol cam and valve train, build a bottom end to take it and put up with the balky low-end characteristics. That's where I'm heading :D

I didn't see the artical so I can't comment on how they put it together, but don't diss oval port heads. If you keep up with the latest technology you will see that many of the latest design big block heads for ultimate horsepower are oval port.
Check these out! And very affordable!
