Engines that are limited to cubic inch rules you never see long strokes small bores. They work best in lower rpm engines. You only see long stroke small bore in engine masters they limit rpm, other wise it would be big bore, short stroke engines.

Lots of ways to get to 500 cu, you only see a 4.730 bore very short stroke, very low deck.

358 limit easy to get there with longer stroke, small bore. All you will see very big bore very short stroke.

I know i will end up buying a large bore block for its cylinder size and better strength.

RPM is power plain and simple if needed just gear it.

Nothing like an engine that just keeps pulling and pulling and pulling regardless what cubic inch it is.

I'm sick of driving around in low rpm stuff. Maybe its the 35 yrs of 1400 ft lb, 1600 rpm engines shifting every 400 rpm lol.

sevens are lucky 377. Still think it would be fun to see what a small engine could do with todays parts.

crower cranks are pricey but they have a 3.00 stroke, 350 main. 2.0 pins.

they even have 2.30 main, 1.89 pin stuff.

Jim, only one problem with your plan...you will paint it gold and make it slow. of course you know blue or red are much faster colors

They say the trans am engines made 485hp. Would not be hard to make more today with todays stuff.

I have an offenhauser cross ram the bottom part of it looks like an exact copy of the bottom of chevy manifold. the top plate is different. In one of my 69 mags there is an add for the same manifold i now have. probably did just copy it. Think i read smokey yunick did the devolpment work on the cross ram in 1967 for chevy for the 68 season.

They do paint those old-mobile engines gold so they run slow so not to scare the old driver. Its not your fathers old-mobile ya right. No wonder there out of business.

Can't do red they tell me red makes people go crazy. I blame the red 66 for the way i'am.

You had to have had more then just the red motorcycle to be the way you are Stay away from red has real bad effects on you. Red or Orange can have bad effects.

As mentioned earlier in the story, the original 302 block has been bored .040-over...The current displacement measures in at 333 ci.
Yes, it's got a 3.25" stroke crank. That's from a 327. So nothing about this build is 302 except the DZ bare block. Just as fake as how they camouflaged the ends of the heads to look period.

Here is a link to another Super Chevy article where they build a 302 with today's upgrades like AFR heads and a roller cam.

http://www.superchevy.com/technical/...ild/index.html

According to the article they used a 283 small journal crank with bearing adapters for a large journal 302 block. The final combination made 519HP and 400 ft lbs of torque, obviously at an elevated RPM range.

My other car is a '69 Z28 and I have the factory 302 (safely in the basement). For years I ran the 302 and overall liked the engine but it was hard on parts and required steep gearing (I ran 4.56's all the time). I got tired of running 4000 RPM's to get anywhere and decided to retire the 302 before it got destroyed and moved to a 350 with my 302 heads and intake. The car is much more pleasant to drive and less stressful. Now it has 4.10 rear gears and a TKO600 so I can cruise down the interstate at 75MPH and about 2500 RPM's.

I will say that it was an awesome sounding car at 8000 RPM's, and scary if you missed a gear.

Default 302

Three inch stroke cranks are not that hard to find, ebay, team camaro, etc. The pistons are readily available from JE, CP or Venolia.

ya theres other places for cranks other then crower. Just never been very
wild about using the factory block. Have not even checked them out to make sure there usable then costs in machining it. So if i were to go aftermarket block can't see spending $1500,$3000 for a block and not go big bore cylinder. At this point its no longer any claim of 302 cu.

I have a new set of 6.250 long rods. That would allow a lighter piston normally used for a 6.00 rod 3.50 stroke. Would use a 49cc chamber head with the short stroke get rid of or most or all of the extremely big dome it takes to get any compression out of a 302. I was going to go forward on building a 302 put it in a light 2500lb street rod in the past. Have since changed my mind on a street rod.

I thought my 56cc chambers were about the minimum. What needs to be done to what heads to get down to only 49cc's?

I have a big bore short stroke engine and LOVE it! I had traction issues with the built 355 I once had so I wasn't too concerned with "giving up" torque even though my newer/ bigger engine would be making more torque than the 355 I was already running. I scored a great deal on a Bryant billet 3.625 stroke crank on ebay and built from there. My 388 (4.125/3.625) runs excellent, idles and cruises just fine around town. When the hammer drops, the power is instant and just builds as the RPMs rise. This is truely the only car I've ever owned where I can't floor it, I have to drive it with a gentle right foot.

Here is a short video I took right after painting my C3:

Interesting combo, 400 block with an uncommon stroke like that.

More details on build, head/cam etc?
