Hello Everyone,
Roy Dudley here. If you don't have the nerve or mechanical aptitude to try this mod, here's a safe and easy alternative. I Had one of my rearview mirrors repaired last year by:
Ed H. Swaneck
4030 Simon Road
Boardman, OH
Telephone: 330-757-9466
Ed, did a fantastic job and turned it around the same day he received them. The price was also great, Somewhere in the vicinity of $75-$80 for the mirror and he guaranteed them never to flop again. He is also a great guy to talk to.
Regards
Roy

You might want to use the nuts that came with the screws to double nut the top end wing nut so that it does not loosen with time. You could even put a little loctite on the nut before you run it down against the wing nut.
The wing nuts cannot turn, but I can see how the screw could slowly back off with use.
May be overkill, maybe not.

I had thought of putting little nylon threaded nuts on but I just couldnt get in there and fit my hands in after the wingnuts were on..maybe in the future.

Maybe cheesy to you but when it happened to me just driving with a drivers side mirron that faced the road was a pain in the butt...and to buy a new one and have it painted wasnt looking that great money wise.

Melting Slicks
Also covered pretty well here:

I ended up using 3/8" brass pipe in place of the main aluminum shaft. I drilled/tapped the aluminum, then ran a small brass pipe nipple into the base of the mirror door mount. A piece of metal tapped out with a 3/8" tap made a nice upper 'clamp' that I tightened up to eliminate the slop.

Seems to me that your fix leaves you with the same weakness of the original. GM obviously knew they had an engineering nightmare here and they did nothing as a coroporation to fix the problem through properly reengineering this horrible design. They kept turning out the same mess for years on end, and we wonder why GM is in trouble? If this had been Toyota, they would have recognized the problem and had it fixed within two years. Same with the rear hand brake. An absolute atrocious, unexcusable, design. I get angry just thinking about it.

Broke my passenger one today... gorilla glued it, sat for 2 hours... tested it @ 130MPH, it's still where it should be... might not be the best way to do it, but it was a quick fix and it works... BTW I don't park close enough to anyone in parking lots where I need to fold the mirror in, I don't mind the walk, plus, when you got a vette and park in the back of the lot, people understand, or steal it...
