CD Changer (Error)
Hi everybody,
About two years ago I bought my first c5 01". I never used the cd changer and recently found that it doesn't work. If I try to bring up the option on my head unit the message reads error. When I put new cds in the changer I hear them cycle thru, but then all that happens is the cd # comes up on screen for a couple seconds then reads error. Has anyone dealt with this problem before? And what is the fix cost if I cannot fix?
Thanks,
Mike

Try loading the cartridge with 12 real CDs (not home made ones) and make sure they are all inserted with the labels facing the right way. Sorry if this sounds simple but I've loaded one or two incorrectly or had a homemade one act up and got the same display as you.

I've had this happen a few times and what I've done is take the whole cartridge out and leave it our for a span of time. (Driving around town for a day doing some shopping)
And like stated above making sure that you have them inserted the right way and have "REAL" CD's loaded almost sounds comical but it's the truth
Let us know how it goes
Thanks,Matt

When I first loaded my Cd's in I put them in backwards (it was the exact opposite of my Alpine system) and it gave me an error message as well. Double check which way they go in and use real Cd's.

Mine acted up once, all I did was unplug it from the harness and plug it back in and the error message went away.

When you put it in, remember not to start the car right away or have the car already running. The starting of the engine will cause the cd player to error since its looking for the cd's at the time.

There is a small reset button on the changer. You need a pencil, or a toothpick to push it in and reset it.
Mine didn't work when I bought my vette used the reset button, loaded the cd's and it's been working great ever since.

you're probably doing what I did when I used to have a changer and tried using it. I was putting the cd's in the way you would "think" they would go into the cartridge, but as others have stated, they go in with the label side down, exactly the opposite of how every other changer I had ever had worked. so try flipping the cd's over in the cartridge.

Where is this "RESET" button located on the changer? Is it located on the back side, requiring a mirror or something? I too just had a CD Changer mishap and would like to see if resetting it will solve my problem.

If you can get the magazine out, check to make sure you don't have a CD stuck inside. I had this problem where the CDs would cycle and everything, but no play. Took the magazine out and thought it was okay, but then I found a stuck CD. Took needle nose pliers to remove it; now it's ruined (Best of ZZ Top)

I will look for a CD lodged inside.
What started my ill CD Changer last week was the left channel going dead, except for occasional sound for a few seconds now and then from a light bump in the road. It's not a problem with the radio & cd inside it, so it was easy to conclude the problem was only with the changer.
Yesterday I thought maybe the connector to the changer became partially unplugged, so I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Then my troubles got much much worse, first it wouldn't register , then later getting that flashing "error".
I do have all home made CDs in there now of which worked fine for many weeks. I will try removing all, then install one retail CD along with reseting and making sure there are no CDs stuck inside.
If I clear it's brain of all that, then I am back to my original problem of the left channel cutting in and out.
Any ideas on that one?

a) a stuck CD
b) CD's inserted wrong in the magazine
c) bad homebrew discs
then try this:
1. with radio on - insert cartridge with real CD's and properly oriented
2. go to radio and select a FM station. Once you hear the radio station...
3. turn off ignition and wait until radio powers off
4. unplug the CD changer back at the storage well; wait 5 minutes.
5. turn ign back on, once you hear the FM station playing...
6. press the AUX button
7. race to the rear storage well and plug the changer back in (you need to be quick with this part)
This re-syncs the serial data line from the changer to the head unit.

I did this last night under the following conditions and it cleared my error message.
- 12 CDs in the magazine, not yet inserted in changer
CD#1 was store bought (#1 is the bottom position)
CD#2 through 12 were computer made
- Radio playing music from a radio station
- CD changer unplugged, then plugged in
- Magazine inserted, then the clicking and clacking for each CD
- Once done cycling, I hit the "RESET" button
It Works Again!
The reset button faces up, right at you. If you don't have good eyes, you won't even see it. Looking in the trunk at the magazine opening , the reset button is top/left. You will need a paper clip or toothpick to push it in far enough.
I wonder if simply hitting the "RESET" button right from the start would do it too, but I had mine all messed up trying other things from the previous evening.

I'm having the same problem... only i don't have a changer, I have the PAC unit to allow my iphone audio to play via a long cord. I took off - battery terminal yesterday after an exhaust install, to reset ECU. Now 'CD changer' not recognized, I get an err. But prior to removing - terminal, all was OK.
