How do you Re-Program Key fob
I ordered a Remote key fob from an auction site. Can someone tell me how to reprogram a used key fob? I have a number 1 that came with the car. The one I ordered is a number 2 (differenr serial number from the number 1) Thanks in advance

Try sitting in the car with the engine off and holding down the lock and unlock buttons down for 7 seconds. The car should recognize and store the fob freq. There is a more detailed instruction in the manual if this doesn't work. Chuck.

Thanks for the info, c5chines, Do you have the instructions in the manual that you could post also?
P.S. I appreciated the additional post on the "welding". That was important info. I should have gone into more detail but didn't want to get into a back and forth with the experts that lurk around here.

Hit options until the DIC message is blank
Hold Reset until it response
The two options on this menu are tire training and fob training
Get to the fob training section, then hit reset again
Hold lck and unlck until it response with 1st fob learned
Repeat for second fob
11 seconds is how long it takes for each fob (seems like a long time when sitting there waiting)

As you've probably found out by now, you can't program a fob to your car by holding down the lock and unlock buttons and waiting for the horn to honk. That only resyncs a current fob to your cars rolling frequency (to help with anti-theft). You program a new fob by using the DIC and following the fob training instructions. (which includes holding down lock and unlock buttons) If it loses sync with the car, you can resync using the first procedure. If just holding down the buttons worked, anyone with a fob could walk up to your car, hold down their buttons, wait for a honk and open your car.

Don't forget that all the key fobs are not the same. It looks like from what you say you ordered the correct one. They are broken down into two types: 1997 through 2000, and 2001 through 2004.
The fobs use the receiver (RFA) which is shared with the TPS system. The system operates at a different frequency for each group.
From Gene Culley's website it looks as though there may even be a third type:
||--Genuine GM Key FOBS/Transmitters--||
10253839 – 97-99 – $79.20
10432147 – 00 – $61.20
25695954 – 01-04 #1 – $66.30
25695955 – 01-04 #2 – $66.30
If you're having trouble reprogramming through the DIC it's worth checking you have the correct #2 fob (25695955) for your 02.

*(*(at this point on the SECOND FOB press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK simultaneously. Message will appear on DIC that 2nd FOB programmed.
9. turn ignition off and remove key.
10. test remotes.
(This will work on both FOBs to open doors, lock doors, open hatch, and IF.....IF you have a #1 and #2 FOB they will set the drivers seat to #1 or #2's preference.) If you happen (as I did have two #2's you may use both #2's to unlock/lock/hatch...but NOT seat preference.)

Matching Transmitter(s) to Your
Vehicle
Each keyless access transmitter is coded to allow
only transmitters programmed to your vehicle, to work.
If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be
purchased and programmed through your dealer/retailer.
Your dealer/retailer can reprogram your vehicle so lost
or stolen transmitters no longer work with your vehicle.
Each vehicle can have a maximum of four transmitters
matched to it.
To match a new transmitter to your vehicle when you
have a recognized transmitter (two recognized
transmitters are required for Canadian owners):
1. The vehicle must be off.
2. Have the recognized and new, unrecognized
transmitters on your person.
3. Go to the rear of the vehicle and insert the vehicle
key into the key cylinder located above the license
plate. See Hatch on page 2-14 for more information
on the key cylinder.
4. Open the trunk.
5. Turn the key five times within five seconds.
6. The DIC will display READY FOR FOB #X, where
X can be 2, 3 or 4.
7. Place the new, unrecognized transmitter in the
glove box transmitter pocket with the buttons
facing towards the passenger’s side.
8. Once the transmitter is programmed, a beep will
sound. The DIC will display READY FOR #X, where
X can be 3 or 4, or MAXIMUM NUMBER OF FOBS
LEARNED.
9. Press the Acc. button (ignition switch).

'04 fob
Well, I need to be the one to drag this out further it seems. I have just recently purchased an '04 Z and have bought a #2 used fob. Does anyone know if the instructions given for the earlier years are the same for the '04? And while I am at it, there was a good link to the '02 owners manual. Does anyone have same for the '04? I understand that this is old stuff to you long time owners but it is all news to me so please be patient.
Thanks in advance
