I found this on the web, so at least it looks like all Z06s have carbon blocker rings.

"Synchronizers -- Carbon blocker rings have been installed on all manual transmission forward gears to provide for smoother shifts and additional robustness."
Hummm ... what about reverse, it's not a "forward gear".

this helps answer some of the questions about what oil can be used in the early c5's (97-99) that may potentially have paper blocking rings.
i've not confirmed if they are paper or graphite.. I assume they are paper (worst case senerio)

Good deal, im getting rid of the royal purple MAX AFX today (its syn.), I have hard shifts in the morning with it but they go away after 30 mins of driving so ill see if that stuff does any better

I have tried Mobil 1 and Dexron VI in mine. I am now using Royal Purple Synchromax and I like it the best of all I've tried. Shifting is real smooth, especially going into 6th and also when downshifting into any gear it just slides right into gear.

Redline MTL working fantastic so far, slightly notchy during the first 3 or 4 miles (I don't think any formulation would completely cure this), much smother than with the D4 ATF after that.

The Dexron VI spec is currently only for the autos, but for those looking for an aftermarket alternative to the new GM fluid, the AMSOIL ATF was recently reformulated to meet the new Dexron VI specification, but is backwards compatible and still meets the Dexron III specification. Since the AMSOIL distribution centers still have some old formulations on the shelfs, be sure to order batch #10189 or higher to get the new version.

This states that Dexron VI is also backward compatible for all earlier applications.

Excerpt:
All DEXRON®-III licences[sic] expire at the end of 2006 and will not be renewed. Beyond that date GM will only support the use of DEXRON®-VI fluids for use in Hydra-Matic transmissions. Fluids sold in the market after that date bearing claims such as “suitable for use in DEXRON®-III applications” or similar wording should be avoided. DEXRON-VI licenced[sic] fluids are fully backward compatible and can be used in all applications covered by earlier GM ATF specifications.
