Default a puff of smoke from under hood

Hey all. I went for a ride to the shore yesterday and encountered a bit of stop and go traffic but also some nice open streches. My temp was at a constant 193-199. I hit a long traffic light and my temp went to 208 or so. I know that is stilll on the cooler side but a quick bit of smoke came out at the center of my hood by the windshield. Like someone was smoking a cig in there and blew the smoke out. Nothing after that. I turned my ac on anyway to kick my fan on. The temp quickly dropped to 192 and I was on my way. No other problems. Do you think maybe something dripped on my manifolds or something? I dont think it was overheating B/C the temp didn't really get that high. Also when I put the AC on It literally felt like I lost 100 ponies Is this normal for the LT1's. It blew ICE cold though. Any input will be appreciated!

Check your valve covers and your intake. Oil leaks are common in both of those areas.

Puff of smoke came BEFORE you turned on the a/c, right? And car was running fine, no stumbles or hesitation, temp a-ok.

ck the underside of your hood, too. see if there's any wet, oily type spray on the black paint of the hood. If so, waterpump going out, may be dripping, too, onto that all important opti.

So, from what you're saying, the a/c running great, but you lost power to a great extent. No, it's not normal. Belt or pulley seizing? That's a wild guess.

Others will chime in.

Yes the smoke came before the ac. I'll have to look on the under side of the hood like you said....but I just replaced my OPTI and waterpump about a month ago.

As far as the power loss...everything is fine. It's just when the ac is on, the power really drops off. I just didn't know if that was normal in these cars. When the Air is off, she pulls like a rape ape

Just to be on the safe side, check out this thread and then check your wiring...It might save your car.
