Welcome to the world of Bose Gold! Probably expect to pay just under $200 to get it fixed. Here's some folks who do repairs.

Same thing in my '93, but my '95 works perfect and has been used more. They must have made improvements, but since the '93 is race only, I'm not going to worry too much about it.

Is it the bose gold? Mine did this, the logic unit gets confused because of bad resistors. I had to turn mine off, then put in the disk and turn it on. Then it would take it. I sent mine off to Dr. Don and had him repair it though, because nothing on the system worked correctly. Now it works as it should. Perhaps your logic IC is confused like mine was....

i spent the other morning on the horn trying to get help with this problem. After speaking to some rebuilders, they say that it is a quite common problem, and it is the plastic gears inside the cd mechanism. It seems that over time they get out of alignment, causing it not to take cds, and also causing the laser not to line up with the cd correctly, therefore not reading a damn thing. It will accept or eject cds only when immediatly turned on, and will only make some wierd kind of "feedback noise", heard in the speakers when fiddling with the controls. No one will sell you parts to fix it yourself. They want to rebuild the whole damn thing for you! United Radio, in Syracuse NY, is cheapest, by the way at ~$185. Oh yeah, the head unit is manufactured by Panasonic (only the accoustics of the car are measured and engineered by bose, with the specs passed off). I called up Panasonic, and they MIGHT sell parts, but I'm not sure yet as they need a model first, and I havent yanked the unit yet.
And thats what I learned about the Bose Gold System. It took me over 4 hours and a call to Bose's corporate Japanese office.

If you get the Panasonic part numbers for the repair could you please post it? I often tear into things and repair myself, especially when I can save a few dollars. In fact, this weekend I tore apart the passenger power seat gear unit and repaired it for $5 versus the $200 rebuild price ;) It should last at least another 8 years now.
I guess all those toasters and radios I took apart as a kid is paying off, lol.
Thanks :seeya

Mine does the same thing when it is cold
Ditto for mine, not a big problem cause I don't use the car in the winter at all

This must happen to us all. Mine has done this for 2 years now. When the car has been sitting outside in like 100 degree heat it will work ok, weird! I thought maybe it was my fault for never cleaning the lens. I think I am going to get a disc changer if its close to $200 bucks to fix it.

Another good place to send it is http://www.carstereohelp.com/
Very reasonable, has excellent "How-to-remove" directions on the website.
I had problems with the CD and the cassette and he fixed them both.

Had the same issues as you all. Took out head unit and replaced it with my Sony MDX unit. I like my mini's. :seeya

Cd laser
If you have time to burn, you can try to clean it and to play with the 2 adjusting screws to find the correct perpendicular position of the laser diode. As for me I changed the optic tray for $ 36, and it works fine now.
