I take an old 12v gel cell and clip a cig adaptor to it and it holds memory while you swap out the battery...Doesn't take much current so any old battery close to 12 volts will work.

I just changed mine after nearly 10 years of service from the AGM unit in my AE.
I used the 9v battery thing in the power point and lost no codes, radio presets or even the clock

Just put in a yellow top Optima battery, I got it because another forum said how great it was, now these comments. I guess the good thing is if mine does fail at least I get FREE replacement for three years!!!!

Stopped by Sears this weekend and their platinum battery didn't meet the 120 RC this forum has insisted upon. Seen a video on one of the post and the man insisted that RC of the battery must be above 120.

C5 battery replacement
Do I need to do anything special when changing batteries? I have a gizmo that plugs a 9V battery into the cigarette lighter. Anything else to be concerned about? Anything with the key fob?

Optima has been great in my 2002 and that's in hot Texas. I worry a lot less about leakage to all those expensive things under the battery tray. Also run AGM in my old Norton Commando motorcycle to avoid leaks and handle the vibrations of that paint shaker of a British twin.
I have one of those 9V cigarette lighter adapters and usually use that as well to avoid loss of power in circuits with memory.

I just replaced my old AC Delco 78/7yr with another ACD 78/7yr and it was an easy 10 minute job. The old battery was weak but didn't leak. The new one was even easier to install with the littel side loops/handles. Dropped it right in, tightened the wire bolts and hold down bolt and away we went. I believe it's a 13ml for the hold down bolt and 8ml socket for the wires. You will need a long extension for the hold down bolt and a short thin socket for the wires or a closed/open ended 8ml wrench. You will need to push pretty hard on the fuse box to fit the socket on to the positive terminal if you don't have an open ended 8ml handy. FYI
Then you just need to put your key in the ignition and hold down the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously on the fob. The horn should beep and your fob should reset.

I've owned 3 Optima red tops. I've never used a battery tender in the winter. My C5 sits for weeks at a time and in 7 years, it hasn't been a problem. I replaced my first Optima at 7 years, not because it gave me any grief, I replaced it because I got more than my money's worth out of it. I was able to keep that battery and not exchange it. It still works after 10 years and I use it to supple 12V Dc in my garage for test projects. I have a five year old Optima in my other car without issue. When my wife's car needs a battery it will be an Optima.

Have the same Optima in my pickup going on 11 years. Optima in the Vette going on 5 years. Go figure.
