Portable jump starter..Safe to use?
Does anyone know if it is safe to use a portable jump starter to start a C5? Looking at a Peak 900 Amp power station to keep in the Vette if the
battery decides to take a dump.
battery decides to take a dump.

I have used one before and it wouldn't start the car if it was really dead...otherwise worked just fine. I will say I didn't have a top of the line one so that may have been the reason I had an issue. I bought it so I could throw it in the compartment in the hatch for long trips. No reason to have it onboard 24/7. Also good to charge the GPS while travelling so you don't have to leave it plugged in all the time and you can go wireless.

Perfectly safe (when used properly)....... I always carry one in the vehicle in which I am driving. From habit, being a retired off-shore fisherman, where there is no road service, you try to prepare for any malfunction. I appreciate the certainty that I always have back-up power available.
I have never had to resort to a jumper, but I have come to the aid of a multitude of stranded motorists who needed a jump. The power pack needs regular charges, so don't just buy it, and forget it.
The key to avoiding problems is through preventive maintenance. Keep your vette and battery serviced.
Also, I never leave home without my cell phone, and my cane (I'm a few months from age
80).

A timely thread - just got a Peak portable jump starter/air compressor today for Christmas - mine is the 600 amp one. From looking at the specs on the box, looks like I need to upgrade to at least the next higher model so it will cover V8 engines also.

You are correct, Jack. The ad for that model is a little misleading. The brand is Peak, and the ad addresses peak amps. Yours is probably the 300 amp - 600 peak amp model. Amp output of 450 amps / 900 peak amps, and above, is preferred. One can't have too many amps when disabled.
The reviews on the Peak 300 amps - 600 peak amps do not recommend purchasing for auto jumps.
Any reason you can't return yours for an upgrade?
