Lurch, i had my engine refreshened because it started to eat a lifter. I wasn't sure if metal got into anything else so I decided to go through the whole thing, and have Mark update it some. It was 9 years old and 25k miles on it. Upon tear down, it was in great shape other then the cam/lifters were shot... Re-ring/bearing the motor, completely went through the heads/valve train etc. When finished, it made 698/681. It recently went 10.59@128.8 in not that good of air. Race weight is now right at 3700lbs with me in it, 3/8 of a tank of fuel and skinnies on the front. I suspect in winter air, it should go 10.4x@130 or so....

I could see yours going low 10s since its lighter and has more gear.

    Hi Alan,

I spoke with you on the phone a few years back when I was putting together my 69. I put a VortecPro 496 in it and it dynoed at 697 hp, and it has the AFR heads on it. I see you have pulled your 496 out to have it "freshened", just wondering if you have had any major problems with yours. Also, your car weighs 3700 lbs or so, it that with you in it? I weighed mine yesterday and it was 3320 lbs., but that is without driver. I will need to get some drag radials for mine because it's not even close to hooking. The rear gears are 3.90. I am hoping for mid 10's in the quarter mile.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting info on the Performer RPM and the stock drop base air cleaner under the L-88. I have an LS5 I'm sorting out, someone put a billet flat top with a 1" drop on the car and a 2" K&N. There's literally <1/2 an inch of airspace between the top and bottom of what was in the car. Now using a stock setup and a 3", clears the L-88 just fine. Any experience with the B&B high flow style?

Hi Alan, LOVE your 71 vette! It inspired me to purchase a 496 from Mark as well! I spoke to Mark about my cooling system and He recommended that I ask you what you are running for electric fans. I have a 1982GMC C1500, so space is not an issue. I also plan to change to a Meziere electric water pump.

Anything you can suggest to keep the beast cool is much appreciated!

Well the car isn't coming until this weekend. I work for Lighthouse Charity Team in Galveston(my dad founded the organization in '84) and we are jammed up with events this weekend and next weekend. Doug Stone(90's country singer) is headlining our annual fundraiser. Maybe after that's done I'll bring the new beater out to Kemah. Have you seen an orange '73 ragtop out there? That's Barry, he's from Texas City too, also has a '64 rag and a early 60's TBird rag. I know lots of car guys in the area, mostly we are into traditional hot rods and Kustoms, and American/British bikes.

I see you are in League City, I have a good friend that lives over on Empress St., behind Wendy's hamburgers. Louie Speaks. His dad, Louie Sr. lives across the canal, both are into hot rods, bikes, boats, etc. I work in Galveston, live in Texas City, I have a '65 Riviera, a couple old Harleys, etc. I am shoping to pick up a '74 4 speed Saturday. Do you ever hang out at Home Depot in Kemah on Saturday nights?
