$800 for dct filter change / top off???
Hi all,
Doing my 7,500 mile filter change today and asked my advisor how much it was for the filter and fluid top off (not change) and he said it's around $800. That sounds exceptionally high. I thought it was roughly half that. How many hours does GM quote to do that job? It's fine if that's pretty typical but I thought I'd check if that's the going rate right now.

By the book, they are supposed to fill the DCT at the top fill port which requires trunk liner removal. Whether they do or not is another point BUT they will charge for doing it by the book. Technically, the plug on the side of the DCT is the level plug, not a fill plug and not a level and fill plug.

Have you received your first, free service?
It's high. 2hrs at most and a $100 filter, maybe a liter of fluid for topping off....
Mine was less including the engine oil and filter change.

Back in January this year my dealer cost was $512.90 (no DCT fluid top off was needed) - filter was $$237.90 and labor $275.00. Personally, the DCT filters I have bought for personal use have been in the $130.00 range. Also, if they are topping off the fluid "per the book" then they will have the additional labor to remove the trunk liner to access the fill port.
So $800 maybe a little high but not a total rip-off!

There is a fill and level check on the side of the DCT. Since they pull the shear plate to change the filter there's absolutely no need to remove the trunk liner.

The 1st year I took advantage of the Free engine oil/filter DCT filter change. That requires a Flush prior to the filter change. Takes about 10 minutes tied to the GM service computer and your OBD port. GM computer does all the work for the flush. It runs the engine at 2000 rpm and you can hear "stuff" going on. At the end Tech's PC said Flush Completed! Tech and I watched as it did its thing. Year 1 Tech used about 8 oz of fluid from a new bottle to top off what is lost with the filter and what is in the filter housing.
Since I only had ~3000 miles year one had the filter changed again on my dime year 3 as required between 7000 and 8000 miles. Tech also did a flush (as GM requires to get any debris into the filter housing and filter so it's removed when it's changed.) Flush was a main reason I had my done year 1. This is my year 3 bill below. Total, including replacing 11 quarts of DCT (expensive) DCT fluid, engine oil/filter was $991. Since I will probably not have 7000 miles end year 2 I'll probably take advantage of the FREE service year 1 with my E-Ray.

Last month did the 7500 mile filter change and flush, total cost with tax was $1056 here in Florida. I believe a filter change and top off is in the $500 range.

A normal DCT fluid fill is done at the side port per the official procedures which indicates the normal fluid fill level. Only the track overfill requires the 2 additional liters to be added at the top fill port per the official procedure which requires removal of the trunk liner.
This was a very quick way to add fluid via the Check level/Fill Plug! One advantage of thin plastic bottles!

I shopped around when I needed this service at 22,500 miles last August. Got four quotes in the range of $625 to $1,000. Went with the $625 quote and a nice bonus was that the dealer participated in Costco's auto service discount program so that reduced it by 15%. Out the door for a bit over $525.

Everyone knows you can get parts online at a serious discount but the DCT filter replacement has to be done at a dealer or authorized shop with GM software in order to perform the DCT fluid flush. Good luck finding a dealer willing to let you bring in a part you purchased elsewhere since they mark up parts and labor and generally will not allow any deviation from that equation.

You asked where so that's where. And many dealers will let you bring in parts. Bottom line is the $800 he was asking about is high in my opinion. If you paid more than that, well...

Agree, both normal filling and the level check use the fill hole on the side. Even the track fill starts with a level check as step 1, which uses the side hole. Once the level is verified, then for a track fill additional fluid is added through the top - and there is no level check afterward - there is no procedure for verifying the level after a track fill.
But....with a DCT filter change which is the subject of this discussion, a level check is also required, after the filter is replaced. And the level check requires the car to be lowered, and idled while the transmission is cycled through the shift positions. is it even possible that no extra fluid is required? If the transmission was filled correctly before the filter replacement, then the level will be low by whatever is in the filter when it is removed. I read various numbers 2 oz to 6 or 8oz so I am not sure what it is.

If that is the case, then they charged you $546 to hook up a computer and run your car for 10 minutes. That is what the "flush" is. Hydraulic flush is not a full drain and change of the DCT fluid. RIPOFF!
