Default What happened to my tire?

I spotted this on my left rear tire. It goes all the way around. If it was alignment problem, you would think it would be wider. There is good tire on both sides of the groove..I'm going to discount tire tomorrow.. Anybody seen this before? Anybody know a good alignment shop in San Diego north county? Thanks Dave

Alignment, under-inflated, faulty tire? Replace it and watch it very carefully.

It's the camber. I assume you may have a Grand Sport or Z06? I had the same after about 10k miles and just put new tires on. A local shop (owner has a C7 Z06 will be doing a custom alignment/camber setting so it's a little less aggressive. I don't know (yet) where it's at, but he said his target is around -0.7 to allow for the crowns in our roads around here, and to still be able to better handle some spirited driving too on the twisty roads.

It is an alignment problem. Get it adjusted when you replace the tire.

Get an alignment, tires are WAYYYY too expensive to replace these days

I replaced the stock toe rods on my 19 GS with adjustable Granatelli toe rods and the alignment tech brought the rear caster down from - 1.1 to ,05. I got 18,000 miles out of my first set of PSS. I am on my second set now with 12,000 miles on them and they are wearing pretty even so far.

@dataporter
How many miles, years and what type of driving? That wear could be "normal" depending on mileage and driving behavior.

That level in 3k miles would indicate a serious toe angle problem. That level of wear in 10k+ miles and it wouldn't be any fault of the alignment. Just having a slightly more aggressive alignment. Also if you hit that in 5 years or, those tires were dry rotted anyway and was time to change.

If you don't track your car consider a 'tire wear' alignment that will extend your tire life.

I am pushing 18,000 miles the car was built in Oct 2018 and I bought it in Dec 2018... I don't track the car but I do like twisty roads

Yeah, so those tires were totally shot from age+mileage. Putting a less aggressive alignment on the car could stretch some treadlife, but it wouldn't really help a whole lot based on your current mileage per year. The PSS is fast wearing and quick to cycle out from age.

I know the Stingray Z51 rear tires are not as wide as the GS/Z06. But since the Stingray Z51 is aligned from the factory for track use, are the Z51 rear tires prone to similar wear patterns as shown here?

Just wondering?

Make sure the alignment shop knows what they are doing. Don't take it to a place that only does OEM spec alignments. Take it to a shop that is good enough to do a custom alignment to your driving style, there is a difference.

Too much negative camber. Probably -1.0 or more. This wear tends to happen more on the passenger side due to the crown in the road. For the street, a camber setting of -0.5 is plenty.

I agree w/ Factoid. Yes, more negative camber increases cornering grip. I run -3.2 in the front because I autocross my Stingray. But for a street car -.5 is plenty. Even on a twisty road the difference in grip is only going to come into play at insane speeds way over anything one should do on the street.

Both sides

Just found this myself on my Z. 13200 miles. Checked them before my 3 hour road trip and didn’t notice anything. Got home and there it is. I should have had aligned a long time ago

Just by looking at that tire I would say too much negative camber. The first thing I did when I received my 2017 GS Z07 was to take off the cup tires and replace them with PS4's and took it to an alignment shop and had them put in just a hint of negative camber and checking that all the other specs were in tolerance. Oh, and call your alignment shop to make sure they have the caster tool before taking your car in.

We had a similar wear experience as OP on a then-new C5 front tire. I had them do an alignment with before-after, that wheel was normal for camber but way too much toe-out. Over the last 24 yrs/300k miles of mixed road tripping/daily driving/track time/autocrossing on four Corvettes, I've found that excessive toe-out wears the inner edges much quicker and much more in a narrow band than negative camber.

How many miles are you attempting to get out of them?
