Turned out to be the fuel pump. The car totally died while they were test driving it and had to have it towed back. I guess there is no code for low or no fuel pressure.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. The fluid is black so I was going to do the ranger flush on it but I think I will wait until they replace the slave cylinder and keep the fluid for future flushes.
