I have found over the years that if I use HP media no matter what the type and burn the disc at the slowest speed that I can choose I never have had a bad outcome, which some refer to as a coaster....

The map update only gives you the latest map...

The map update only gives you the latest map database for the radio to access and doesn't install anything to the nav radio and doesn't effect the firmware in any way.

Losing the navigation info showing up in the HUD display when in heavy freeway traffic is just too big a safety factor loss to consider going with after market nav units.

All they would have to do is make a disc image file available for download and people could burn a disc themselves and pop it into the CD slot and it would be fixed. Would cost GM next to nothing.

There is no need to remove the nav radio to update the firmware, They already did that on the early c6 nav radios to fix a tuning problem and add support for mp3. Denso just wrote a firmware update...
