npp exhaust

since i have heard such wonderful things about the npp, i was wondering, and this may be a completely stupid question from a newbie.

can the npp exhaust be installed on the LS2. i ordered my car before finding this wonderful resource and although i KNOW i will be happy with my little "old" LS2 i had this question.

SunsetOrangeCreations 07-19-2007 01:57 AM

Here is link to the post about adding the z06 bi mode exhaust to a ls2.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1726443

I am in the process of doing it.

I didnt want to buy an 08 for the exhaust so I'm putting in 3" Z06 exhaust instead! Ha.

BTW the zo6 mufflers are 2.5" inlet. The Zo6 pipes neck down to 2.5 into the mufflers.
Gm just reused the same mufflers and used 2.5" pipe from the cats to the mufflers on the 08 ls3 npp system.

I am using a corsa 2.5" to 3" x-pipe to mate the ls2 cats to the z06 mufflers. I am using all gm vacuum tubing so no fab work is needed.
The valves will need a manual switch or a NPP / Z06 Exhaust Commander switch to operate like a stock z06 or NPP but that is not too difficult.

Good Luck on the install!

No such thing as a "stupid question" only an unanswered one.

You would need to retrofit the LS3 electronics also. It would be a project for sure. Problematic probably also.
Now, if you acquired the NPP plumbing and installed a "mild to wild" switch, eliminating the electronics...

Be sure you hear the new system before to jump ahead with this. You may find better sound in the aftermarket. Since you're in Cali, don't forget about future smog testing.

talon90 07-19-2007 06:08 AM

Mechanically the NPP will bolt right on, no problem. The problem comes down to the operation of the butterfly valves. The exhaust takes its cue from the throttle position sensor and rpm gage. The NPP also operates on vacuum pressure to actuate the butterfly valve and you won't have the requisite vacuum storage or pressure lines to cause it to operate. At the end of the day, it will be an "always open system" until someone comes out with an aftermarket control strategy.

hawkeyefan 07-19-2007 06:38 AM

I would suspect that it would be a very difficult task given one thread I recently read. It is a thread where a forum user just received their 2008 car but it was missing the NPP exhaust. It appeared that the dealership felt it was way too complicated adding NPP to a non-NPP car so they ordered them a new car instead.

robl45 07-19-2007 07:04 AM

I think that was more of an issue of they got a brand new car and didn't want it being manhandled by the dealership although I haven't read the whole thread. But seriously, some dolt will come along and point out that the npp wasn't original on the car and who wants to buy a new car and deal wtih that?

It can be installed on an older car if you don't mind operating it manually. I have a friend who has done it, and I watched him open and close it - so I know it can be done.

Anything's an improvement over the weak, stock C6 exhaust but IMO you can do better than the NPP exhaust. IMO unless you just like the sound of the NPP exhaust (compared to other systems) I'd find an after-market exhaust you like and go with that....have your Corvette sound 'good' all the time...not part time. I'd hardly worry about an after-market exhaust negatively affecting resale value.

For those of us that like to stay on the good side of our neighbors the NPP (or any A/M bimodal exhaust systems) makes sense when it comes to changing the Corvette sound. I just don’t want to hear my neighbor pounding on my door complaining about my waking them up at O dark thirty every morning while leaving for work.

Wayne, have you spent any time driving an 08 with the NPP? I have. And I've had three Corvettes with B&B Bullets (and one with B&B PRTs). I've heard most of the other aftermarket exhausts as well. The NPP sounds as good as any of them, in my opinion. And you CAN have the sound all the time. For about $18, I put a switch in my circuit. I have have the good sound all the time, and turn it to quiet for those times I don't want it louder.

GM hit a grand slam with this option. From the posts I've seen, most of the people voting against it have never driven one. I've now got about 1200 miles on my car - about 900 with the exhausts open all the time. To me, there are absolutely no negatives to this system - only positives.

I can't say that I have had the fortune to own as many Vettes as you have, but I did my fair share of research by listening to other owners Vettes at car shows and gatherings, I also got a chance to listen to an NPP exhaust at a semi-local dealership last week (for those of you in the central Jersey location, Oasis chevrolet).

With that said, I can say without any doubt or reservations, that the NPP sound doesnt even come close to the Borlas!!! The NPP sounds like a sick Corsa with thin walls. I can't believe anyone would like them. Grand Slam for GM - HA!!! Its more like a foul ball that went over the wall and hit an old lady in the head!!!

Anyway, in the end it's just personal opinion, yours is as good as mine, but I can tell you that NPP will never be found on my Vette...

BTW, for those folks that are concerned about your neighbors - stick with the base exhaust for your Vette - I found that the NPP is very loud at start up, just as loud as aftermarket exhaust. Also, when pulling into your driveway, aftermarket exhaust is no louder...

Did you ride in the cars, or just listen to them standing still? While I agree that it is all subjective, I've ridden in two different C6's with Corsa Sports. One of them I rode in for about three hours -much of it very spirited driving. I can assure you that the NPP sounds much deeper than they do. These are very close to the Bullets I had just. I also suspect you did not listen to the NPP's with the fuse pulled.

If you feel you have heard them enough to make a fair comparison, I will say that yes, it's subjective and I would not tell you or anyone else is wrong. Just be sure to give them a fair chance before ruling them out. I can tell you that based on my rides in cars with Corsas that I have always considered them a total waste of money - I hope that gives you an idea of where I'm coming from.

I heard Borlas inside and outside the car, Corsas and NPP outside only. The Borlas to me are like the definition of what a car like this should sound like. I did not care for the Corsas and NPP - too raspy/tinny, not deep/mellow enough. But, I don't disagree with you that I should drive in the car to finalize my opinion, and I probably will do that. But with that said, and knowing that Borlas are a bit cheaper than NPP, very easy to install, look great, and sound absolutely incredible, I think my money is on the Borlas.

BTW, I hate the NPP split personality thing. I know that its a plus for many people, but I just see it as a gimmick that has no place on a sports car. And honestly, as far as the neighbors are concerned, NPP is NOT that quiet, like I said in my previous post, the start up is LOUD, so if people think that this will make their neighbors happy - think again...

Its just the rpm actuating of the valves that is harder to do. But not really that hard, I'm just using a MSD RPM Switch to open the circuit to the vac solenoid at a specifed RPM. So it opens at say 3000 rpm and the valves open, or hit the mild to wild switch and they are open all the time. There you go....

In the end it works 90% the same as the z06 or NPP. Just not using the BCM signals for the valve operation so no comp mode and regular mode.

Nice job. Not something I would have attempted.

to NPP or not?

If anyone were to ask me what option to get on a vett, it would be the NPP on top of the list, without having to think about it. I think most 08 owners with the exhaust would agree hands down as well. I've listened to the exhaust where it counts, in the drivers seat for 500+ miles. Some can argue the sound, some can argue the price, but for $ 1299 (MSRP)+$ 15.00 + 20 minutes of time (for the switch), you get two exhaust systems for the price of one.

Just my 2 cents!

Have not heard the Borlas, i was strictly stating in my post that if anyone asked me what option i'd get i'd recommend the NPP without question. For me, the split personality of the exhaust is worth every penny. Again, this is only my opinion and clearly noise from an exhaust is subjective. I'm not knocking other exhaust systems (especially w/o hearing them), just praising one i happen to own and like very much.

I've heard Borlas. I'm the first to admit that they sound damn good. Do they sound better than NPP's? yeah, they probably do. But I still favor the NPPs because they sound pretty close, and they can do tricks that Borlas can't do.

I don't think anyone is trying to imply that we are right and you are wrong. But we are saying that we have spent many hours driving the NPP cars and we'd like people to reserve judgement until they ride in one.

If you listened to the NPP by standing behind the car while someone at the dealership revved it, then you have not heard it. I did the same thing at Cruise In 8. I'm the one that filmed the video posted here. It sounds much better under load, while in the car and while someone does a drive by. Revving w/ no load doesn't do much

Do I think it sounds any better than many catbacks? No. It's about the same. But your description about a foul ball puzzles me.

What is it about this one factory option (that's all it is, another factory option) that upsets so many? If you don't want it, don't get it. What's the deal?

And to the OP. As much as I like the NPP, if I had an '07 or older C6 - no way would I go to all of that trouble and expense. Geeze - that one guy took apart the whole ass end of his C6 to retrofit an exhaust. That's not worth it to me. I'd install the cat back of my liking.

SunsetOrangeCreations 07-20-2007 02:35 AM

Ahhh.... Need for Speed.... I see you ordered the NPP for your 08...
So you just had to have it.....

Its the Coolness of having Loud or Quiet when you want it....

I dont need an 08 to get what I want.

If your going to do a cat back the procedure is basically the same, just the vac tubing is a little more work.
Besides. I have 3" exhaust now and the Npp is 2.5". I could add the B+B Fusion mufflers If I wanted, they will mate right up to my 3" x-pipe.

If you want it even louder stock npp/z06 mufflers check out this thread.....

Maybe next on the list of tinkering.

I am just as puzzled at people refering to it as "Grand Slam". This option is for people who are either in love with the word "stock", or don't realize just how easy a Borla goes on, or never heard Borlas. But after all is said and done its just a Gimmick, and an expensive one at that. I doubt that a person who ever had Borlas on their car would fall for it. I think this option will be loved by the dealers though, mmmmm $$$$....

I don't recall many people being "upset" about it, what I see is that many people are enchanted by this gimmick and a small percentage are turned off by it, but "upset" - not really... However, being that as it is, and looking at Kerbecks future inventory, just about every car has this new GM exhaust creation. So I guess if anything, people that don't like the NPP could get slightly annoyed that they can't find a car without it on the lot, and are are left with two options - either pay the extra money for the NPP or order a new one and wait till its delivered. Like I said, I think this option will be loved by the dealers, mmmmm $$$$....

That comment is clearly aimed at me. Maybe you missed the fact that I have had four Corvettes with B&B exhausts (the Bullets are considered the "meanest" sounding made for a Corvette).

Let me also tell you that I know exactly how easy they are to install. I've installed them myself - with no help, in my Garage. I can change out a system in my garage in 90 minutes - including jacking up the car, getting out tools, putting them away etc.

If you like another exhaust more than the NPPs, fine. But if you are going to make comments like the one above, you might want to size up who you are taking aim at first :nono:

By the way, no hard feelings. I respect people who like a good debate! Just be sure you don't show up with knife at a gunfight! I'm not an amateur at this :D you, on the other hand, don't even own a Corvette, and the GTO in your avatar is not even yours. Oh, and another thing - per your comment above...."This option is for people who are either in love with the word "stock", I see by one of your posts that your GTO is actually "stock". See, I do pay attention!

Sounds like OHMY likes CHEAP and LOUD, probably can't afford it anyway, net cost to me was 985. You can always install something cheaper, especially when you place absolutely no VALUE ON YOUR TIME. Not only are The DEALERS going to like it as OHMY say's, BUT THE CUSTOMERS ARE GOING TO LOVE IT. OHMY doesn't OWN an NPP
so he's definitely not talking from experience, just alot of HOT AIR and BS.

I think u might have forgotten you medication this morning, this comment was not intented at you or anyone in particular. Why would you say that the comment is directed at you? Seriously, what in the world would make you draw that conclusion?

BTW, I stand by my comment, NPP will most likely be desired by people who are either in love with the word "stock", or don't realize just how easy a Borla goes on, or never heard Borlas.

And thanks for the "other" advise, but honestly, I think you're taking yourself a bit too seriously...

Lastly, just because I don't like NPP, does not mean I'm disrespecting other people who do like it, I'm simply disagreeing with their choice.

You might be right about my meds, but I don't have a reading disorder. You said, and I quote : "I am just as puzzled at people refering to it as "Grand Slam". I am the one who referred to it as a Grand Slam. How could that comment NOT be aimed at me?

Not only are The DEALERS going to like it as OHMY say's, BUT THE CUSTOMERS ARE GOING TO LOVE IT. OHMY doesn't OWN an NPP
so he's definitely not talking from experience, just alot of HOT AIR and BS.

Really?? hmmm, how does what I said in my prior posts indicate that I like cheap and loud??? Although I would agree with you if we were talking about women, :) I totally don't see how you made that conclusion.

And how could you possibly know what I can or can not afford??? You should be embarassed to have made that statement, very foolish.

As far as experience goes, well, I said I've heard both, so the experience is there, but how about yourself, have you ever heard Borlas?? how about NPPs? hmmm, I wonder.

Let me sum it up for you: I said I like Borlas over NPP, I've heard both, I like Borlas better.

So now, based on your statement, you are saying that people that like Borlas on their cars like a cheap and loud exhaust? Are you sure you though that out? Are you sure you want to make that statement? heh heh heh, right, I didn't think so...

ok, I stand corrected, that does make sense... Well, although you did make that statement, I lost track of that fact, and simply used the "Grand Slam" reference as a natural counter-reply to the other user who commented on my "foul ball" statement. It honestly wasn't directed at you, I just wanted to keep the baseball "theme". Here is a retraction: change the "Grand Slam" reference in my previous post to "Home Run" (that way the baseball imagery is still there but does not make it seem like its directed at you)...

What's With All This Bashing?

I can't believe all of the bashing going on with each and every new option GM has offered on their C6 Corvettes. The new colors are being bashed, the new wheels are being bashed, 4LT has been bashed, and now here we go with the new dual mode exhausts. These are options, you don't have to buy them if you don't like them! But why bash them? I commend GM for their efforts to continuously improve their flagship Corvette. That doesn't mean that every improvement will appeal to everyone's personal taste. If you don't like it, don't order it. I would venture to say that most owners appreciate and approve of GM's committment to the Corvette.

I am really getting tired of the continued bashing and personal attacks going on within this Forum. It takes away from the quality and enjoyment I have been receiving from the CF over these past years. When I owned my C5 I never saw these kinds of reactions in the C5 section. What's with this C6 section?

Rant is over! Now I will enjoy the fact that my new JSBlue C6 Z51 3LT NAV NPP will come off the assembly line Monday, VIN 1640, with a museum delivery of Aug 8th.

Gene...

I can't believe you ordered Nav on your car. I have three nav systems, and the Corvette is by far the worst...

Sorry - I couldn't resist. I really DO think the Nav is the worst, but I got it again on my new car - so I'm just having a little fun

Jim, this will be my first NAV system. So I will learn from it. I went with the factory NAV because I was tired of all the wires floating around the cockpit in my C5...SIRIUS, Radar, and my CB for our club runs. Thought I would get rid of all this stuff in my C6.

Thanks for the laugh...Gene

Here's my story....The car is a "toy" for me. Nav is a toy. A bad toy is better than no toy. And you know what they say about he who dies with the most toys wins!:D

Why is is that all the Camaro, GTO, Mustang people (o.k. just read Jim's post - you're not even one of those  ) think that all Corvette owners wear tweed c0ksuker caps and a neck scarf when they drive their Corvettes and don't know how to turn a wrench? You keep repeating yourself about stock. You love Borlas so much. I don't like resonance in an exhaust system.

I installed my own B&B PRT's on my C5. I installed my own Corsas on my C5. I have turned just about every bolt on my '79 Camaro including rebuilding the engine, installing edelbrock heads, comp cams 262 cam, calibrated the carb, installed a complete Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust system, hooker headers, rebuilt the front end steering linkage, replaced subframe bushings, upper and lower control control arm bushings and ball joints, installed elec fan w/ adj thermostatic switch & A/C relay, new radiator, tranny cooler, coil springs, leaf springs, shocks, bought a 700R4 (that's a transmission ;) )out of a wrecked 92 Camaro, rebuilt it, retrofitted it into the 79, installed a lockup torque convertor w/ lockup switch, replaced the entire idiot light instrument cluster w/ one out of a 79 Z28, replaced 2.41 one legger rear end w/ a 3.42 posi out of an '80 Z28, rebuilt the posi clutch pack. That's covers about half of the mechanical work. I also restored the entire interior and replaced all the exterior trim.

But we all know you are mechanically superior because you can install a catback exhaust system on a late model car (that belongs to someone else ) To guys like you, an intake is a glorified air filter. To guys like me, an intake sits between the cylinder heads

.

Did I ever say I was mechanically superior? Right - thats your own conclusion based on your current emotional state of mind. My advice to you is to calm down, relax, and reread my posts. :yesnod:

But what I find entertaining is that you assume that just because you played around with a few cars, this makes you now superior to me because you also assumed that I have not done the same or more. And then there was that very clever attempt at sarcasm with the intake comment, which was again based on absolutely nothing but your imagination. Needless to say, all your assumtions and conclusions were 100% wrong. And, as interesting as you car resume was, it really doesnt prove or disprove anything...

what exactly does that give away about me? sorry man, you are streching here even further than before - just bc a person uses those words does not mean they are upset. Sarcastic perhaps, but not upset, so ummm, you are 100% wrong again...

oh I was kidding about dragging a catback all the way to Jim's, but I'd love to meet up sometime when I do go down next. I probably make it down there 5 times a year. Maybe have a mini h-town get together at one of the mexican food spots

That sounds great. Do you ever run at HRP ? If so, a get together this fall might be just the ticket.
