Default Help, surging after air intake installed!

Well to make a long story short, installed Haltech Tric intake and took out maf sensor screen, notice car surges at part throttle at driving speeds. Then put a granetelli meter on to see if it solved the problem and it helped but still a slight surge. Have dynoed the car and it seemed to have picked up about 10 rwhp by the intake. Is this normal for the intake of is there something else wrong?

Assuming the install is fine and there are no leaks, I would recommend getting your hands on an AutoTap to see if the car is running lean.

tech,
put the MAF screen back in, and see what happens.........be sure to re-set anything you changed BACK to original specs........DRIVE it..........hard, slow, fast, medium.........

You said in an earlier post you had a '01 Z I think,,,,,,,,,,

Also, did you do the relearn??.........
With a/c on,
And with a/c off..........
With battery disconnected, with 16 & 23 fuses pulled?.

Try the first item/s...........

And yes, this is a common thing, but usually more problematic on '02's..............

Then if it doesn't clear up after a good 100 mile relearn, e mail Jim @ Halltech.......

I had a similar experience. I had the TRIC/MAG combo installed on my 01Z06 and ran it for a year with the screen intact without any problems. After the 02 Z06 came out without the screen in the MAF, and based on many others experiences, I decided to remove it from the MAF on my car.

Straight away I noticed that I had a problem. I was on the freeway and I set the cruise control to 65mph and the car was running real bad, bucking and surging. After speaking with John of Team-ZR1 and letting him run a scan on my car, it was obvious that I was running very lean (20%). I installed the MAFT and larger injectors and was able to dial in my AFR to where it should be, AND pick up a healthy dose of timing and torque in the process.

At this point the car was running a heck of a lot better, and under WOT it simply screamed!!! BUT, I still was getting slight surging under light load conditions, eg going downhill off the throttle. With the tuning that had been done on the car I knew the AFR must be good, so the only explanation I can find is that the MAF must be reading incorrectly (due to turbulence under light load conditions?).

I switched out the TRIC for the T1(sidewinder) elbow, and now my surging is gone. The car runs great!

I have seen posts by other members where they have had similar problems, especially on the 02 Z06 using the TRIC and the Blackwing. I don't know if they have managed to overcome the surging by tuning alone. Halltech's fix for running a TRIC on an 02 is to swap the open MAF with a screened 01 MAF.
I still feel that it is a turbulence issue, but I don't claim to be an engineer.

If anyone has any more thoughts or theories about this, then please chime in.

Hope this helps!

:)

Surging is coming from the screen removal. I went and bought another stock MAF, installed it with my setup and the surging went away.

They run $120.

And by the way, I never noticed a performance improvement when I pulled the screen or any degradation when I put the new one back in.

To take the screen out when running a TRIC you need to drill a whole in the TB plate. Halltech has more details.

No need to do this with the Sidewinder and no screen.

That does make sense to drill a hole in the tb, have done it on a few other performance applications, anyone have the exact size of hole and location in the tb blade? Nothing on Haltechs Site,
