The comment in the manual is there because a lawyer told them it would be in their best interest to have the disclaimer, not an engineer.
Have you called the factory to verify this BS statement? This statement is fundamentally flawed. If GM just put 6.5 qts into a dry engine at the factory it's most likely it would be showing pretty low on the dipstick. There is a lot of oil left over inside the engine after an oil drain ... and depending on exactly how the engine is drained can change the required amount of new oil to obtain the same level on the dipstick.

Yeah, lawyers determine the technical specifications of car.

I guess I missed that. The OM and factory shop manual both say capacities are approximate and that the dipstick should be used to determine correct oil level ... so not sure what documentation you are looking at.

The same could be said about doing an oil change. Depending on how long you let it drain, if you raise the back end up or not, etc can have a bearing on how much oil it takes to get to the "F" mark. There is probably more variation in how people perform an oil change then the variations in the oil pan, dipstick, etc. Next time you do an oil change, lift the rear end up 12" and let it drain over night. When I do that, 6.5 qts puts the level in the middle of the hash area, and 7 qts puts it right at the "F" mark. If someone does a "Jiffy Lube" quick style oil change, then 6.5 qts might put the level near the "F" mark.

Nope ... I was there when the truck delivered the car and followed it every second it was there until I drove it away.

Hey, I'm sure any C5 will be happy with 6.5 qts added at an oil/filter change ... but what if adding 6.5 qts put the level at the "L" mark on the dipstick? ... would you ignore the dipstick reading and just run the 6.5 qts because the service manual said it was the "approximate" amount required? I certainly woudn't.

Glad to see you read your manual.
If GM is good, but not perfect; how can they tell you the perfect amount of oil to add without even seeing your individual car?

Your saying GM can get EVERY variable that would effect the correct amount of oil to add perfect (they would need to, in order to tell you the perfect amount of oil to add, which would include an oil pan that you've already stated GM can make good, but not perfect) but they cannot get the parts used to indicate the oil level perfect as well?

Also, I doubt the statement telling you to check your oil level was added to satisy a lawyer. Though even if it was, i'll continue to check my oil level and fill to the appropriate level, as I would with any other fluid in the car. You can continue adding 6.5qt's and calling it a day, and hopefully; this thread can end.

Just for the Record, I had the rear of the car aproximately 4 inches higher than the front when I drained the oil. I let the oil drain for approximately 40 Minutes. I then removed the oil filter and let it drain for approximately 15 more minutes. I then filled the oil filter lubricated the seal on the top of the filter and installed it. I then installed the drain plug and put 6 quarts in ran the engine for 10 minutes then let it sit for 20 minutes and checked the dip stick. Then added another 1/2 quart stared the engine let it run for 10 minutes and then let it sit for another 20 minutes. Checked it again then added the final 1/2 quart to get to the full mark on the dipstick. Total 7 quarts not including the oil in the filter. Now you know exactly what I did and why ...Dave
