Default Carbon fibre brake ducts

Below are a couple pictures of the carbon fibre braked ducts that are used on the Mosler MT900's, which fit the Corvette C5 upright.

If anyone is interested, I can see what kind of price I can get on them.

do these put the air out to the center of the rotor, or just spit it out onto the inside face?

I can't tell from the picture.

Thanks,
Matt

is there any functional point in making these out of carbon fiber?

its not even something people will ever see

Shave a few grams maybe. For us, its faster/easier to lay them up in carbon, than to bend and weld sheetmetal, plus saving weight anyplace we can (esp. unsprung), is a Mosler creed.

I had a brain fart last night...the round part of the duct sits inside the rotor, so the air is ducted to the inside of the rotor. I'll still get a picture on a car, and/or with a rotor to better show it.

I've had my mind on some new uprights for the GTS version of the racecar, which would duct the air in around the bearing, and then out thru the rotor.

Is there any movement between the knuckle and hub after use?
What thickness is the brake duct material?
What diameter is plate surface?
Will it fit a C4 (redrilling mounting hloes)?
Price?
I'm interested in more pictures as you mentioned.

What kind of epoxy are you using to stand up to the temps you expect to see? For that matter, what temps ARE you expecting to see?

The CF is cool, but if the epoxy softens up, won't work too well. Also, could plain fiberglass be used and save some $$$?

Thanks, and have a good one,
Mike

I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean after you remove the duct/plate?

I think he means after it compresses and will it melt or burn as in trans am cars?

It appears the cooling duct gets mounted between the knuckle and hub. If that is correct, does the bolt and nut get torqued to original specs and is there an issue with compression of the duct plate over time? I've had a plate on a previous car, but it mounted without affecting the hud and knuckle assemblies.

There wasn't a car available with a complete suspension, but this image shows how they mount to the upright, going around the bearing/hub, ie its not sandwiched anyplace.

Answers to questions:
What thickness is the brake duct material?
~1/8"

What diameter is plate surface?
9.75

Will it fit a C4 (redrilling mounting hloes)?
Possible. We don't have a C4 upright around to check.

Price?
$200.00 a pair

What kind of epoxy are you using to stand up to the temps you expect to see?
glass shop supervisor wasn't in, but I can find out. I'll also track down the race crew chief to get the temps.

The CF is cool, but if the epoxy softens up, won't work too well.
Perspective racing won the GTS class at the 2003 24 Hours of Daytona, and ran the 2002 season with them, and Rollcentre Racing ran the 2002 24 Hours of Bathurst and the 2003 24 Hours of Daytona with the same set. I don't recall any of the cars built so far replacing them, for any reason other than a crash.

Also, could plain fiberglass be used and save some $$$?
Maybe. I'd have to talk to the composite shop. I suspect it would take a minimum number of orders, since they make, and have the carbon ones on the shelf.

Hi Guys,

The carbon ducts do not sandwich between the bearing and uprignt. The carbon would not take the cornering loads and would crush. They have to be bolted to the upright, so they will require drilling and taping of the upright.

Next, you must be careful to not stop on track or pit without a cool off lap on the race track. If you are not going hard enough to get the brakes hot enough to need a cool off lap then you do not need the ducts. The problem is that in situations like that, you can catch the ducts on fire. I have seen race cars burn to the ground after a carbon duct caught on fire. My own Trans Am car caught on fire at the Las Vegas race in 2000 when the duct flamed up. I broke a drive shaft and could not do a cool off lap and the brake duct started on fire, and so did the hood and all. It will be a situation like a mechanical failure that will cause problems.

We built our street C5 ducts out of Aluminum for just that reason. We do have access to carbon ducts and will sell them if each buyer signs a release accepting the risk.

Having said that; if I were racing, I would want the carbon, but for what is at stake on a track day, I would think twice. The weight difference is about 3 ounces each

Thanks
LG

Now that you said it I can easily see that they mount like that.
