I don't think I've ever kept a car completely stock. Got to change at least a few things to make it more personal.

Both. -Depends on the car.
I'm a long time member of the NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) and my 1st experience with rebuilding was a 6 year project getting my grandfather's '57 Vette in near 100% factory new condition. All correct casting dates/parts sourced, factory grease/chalk marks reproduced, etc.
On my red "run of the mill" C5zo6, it's modded far from stock. That being said, if I found a very low mile '01 Speedway White Zo6 I'd keep it stock (or keep the mods reversible).
Classic or unique/rare models I'd preserve, otherwise, mod away..

I am a modder. Nothing against purist, but I just like to improve on what I have. My modders are mostly cosmetic and if the need arises, I can convert it back to stock.

I have never left a car stock. Too boring. I have had a couple of pretty rare ones, too...
1994 Toyota Supra Turbo: 1 of 364
1973 Pontiac GTO, factory 4-speed: 1 of 926
1976 Pontiac Can-Am: 1 of 1133
1989 Pontiac Turbo T/A Indy 500: 1 of 1324

Both...depends on the car.
We have two modded C5's. My '99 is modded for performance, my wife's '01 is modded for appearance.
On the other hand, my '64 is NCRS restored.

A pure purist, but here's my take, I think that it might have to do with age. I'll bet that most modders are under 40 and most purists are over 40.. Sort of like people--People under 40 are more likely to mod their body with tattoos and piercings and older people probably think twice about it.
