In the Market for a New Set of Run Flat Tires
I am considering replacing my Goodyear F1 Run Flat tires the following Run Flat tires:
Dunlop SP Sport 9000 DSST
Tread wear: 280
Traction: AA
Temperature: A
Michelin Pilot XGTZ4 ZP
Tread wear: 300
Traction: A
Temperature: A
Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP RFT
Tread wear: 340
Traction: AA
Temperature: A
I drive my 99 Corvette convertible only half of the year never in the winter. I don't use the vehicle on the track in fact the only time I drive it like it is "on rails" is when I travel to Kentucky once or twice a year to see family members. The car is equipped with Z-51 suspension and I must say it is much much more fun driving the car on the twist and turns of southeastern Kentucky :jester than the straight ways of the Detroit Michigan area.
If anyone that has purchased the Dunlop SP Sport DSST tires please let me know how they perform. Also if you have purchased the Firestone Firehawk or Michelin Pilot tires please let me know how they perform.
Thanks,
Paul

FireHawks... Great EMT replacements IMO. I've got a couple of thousand miles on them and not one complaint.

Firehawks..without a doubt...Car rides better, performs better, and they look great. Only drawback is that they look a shade narrower than the goodyears due to the design. I love em!! My son got 40K on his on his Z28

I'd recommend the Firestone Firehawks run flats. Just put a set on my 98 coupe, and they are noticibly quieter and at least if not better in the sticky department. (they are also less expensive)

You can add my endorsement to the Firehawks!
Good wet and dry grip, VERY quiet and a ride that make you forget about the Goodyears entirely!

Re: In the Market for a New Set of Run Flat Tires (C54U2NV)
Thanks for all the information regarding the Firestone tires.
MOZIN,
As for the Dunlop Run Flats (i.e., DSST) I am including some information about them below. Tire Rack lists the front not the rear. If anyone knows when the rears will be available let me know.
275/40-18 - $2--.00 (not sure of the price)
245/45-17 - $180.00 ($360.00)
In order to minimize the inconvenience of the inevitable flat tire, Dunlop has been developing run-flat tire technology since the early 1970s. Dunlop's early DENOVO run-flat tires were followed by their Denloc ultra high performance run-flat tires, which were used as original equipment on the Porsche 959 supercar with its 200 mph top speed. Additionally, Dunlop racing tires incorporating the Denloc design were used by IMSA GTP and FIA Group C Class racing cars for North American and international endurance racing events such as the 24 Hours of Daytona and 24 Hours of LeMans. The disadvantage of these earlier systems was that they required the use of unique wheels which greatly increased the cost of installing a run-flat system.
More recently in Europe, Dunlop has sold ultra high performance tires which incorporate a new run-flat technology that is designed to be mounted on current original equipment and aftermarket wheels. This run-flat technology is being introduced in the United States by incorporating it into Dunlop's flagship "HydroMax" performance tire, the SP Sport 9000. This new run-flat tire line currently offers five sizes and has been named the SP Sport 9000 DSST, with the DSST suffix identifying that it utilizes Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology.
Designed to continue running for up to 50 miles at speeds up to 55 mph even after sustaining air pressure losses which would render conventional tires unusable, SP Sport 9000 DSST tires allow drivers the convenience of being able to better choose when and where they will have their tire repaired. For that matter, when driven straight down the road or on the highway, SP Sport 9000 DSST tires are so good at masking the traditional loss-of-air symptoms which accompany a flat tire, that they require a tire pressure monitoring system to alert the driver that they have lost air pressure.

I'd say the safe route would be with the Firestones. I have yet to hear a negative opinion about them. I have a friend with the Michelin's and he's also very satisfied with them. I think the Dunlop's would be a little bit of a gamble at this point.

My 'Stones are great! Haven't heard of any Dunlop runflats out there yet so I don't know how they would do, would like to see how well they perform as well. How does the tread look on the Dunlops, pretty aggressive if I remember correctly from the other 9000 series tires I've seen.

I really really like my Firestone run flats. Smooth, quiet, and fairly good grip.
I drove over 70 with a flat. And did not damage the tire.

i talked to luke at tire rack about that same tire. he said dunlop has yet to ship one to tire rack date and so they pulled the size for the rears off the site.
