it wouldn’t hurt. Hardest part for me was getting the windshield wipers off. They were stuck on tight. Also be careful removing the vent screen it may be brittle from age.

Metal pieces from rear end is surely a concern. Also check rear wheel hubs. Had one go bad a few years ago. It made a whine like you described.

Plug looks wet. I would start off with new plug and swap wires with another cylinder. If problem does not move then swap coils with another cylinder. Hopefully one of those will be the problem.
