Default 1968 L36 427 FOR SALE - matching #'s

1968 Chevrolet Corvette L36 Coupe

VIN#194378S412269
Trim: Chevrolet C24
Trim 420 983 Paint

427ci, 390hp, TH400 transmission. All matching numbers. The car has had a frame on restoration a few years ago, and was painted its original color, British Green (code 983). The paint is not perfect, but very good. T-tops with removable rear window are in great shape. All of the chrome on the car is excellent, and much of it is new, including all of the emblems. The bumpers are almost perfect. The weather stripping was also replaced. The frame is very nice, solid, unrestored condition. Much of the interior is new, including new seat covers, seat foam, carpet, kick panels, and door panels. The saddle interior (code 420) is rare for 1968, but is factory. New brakes, new exhaust, new starter, new tires (Yokohama by Diamond Back – radials). The engine and transmission were both freshened not too long ago. Runs, drives and shifts perfectly. Does not smoke, leak or make any strange noises, and has great oil pressure. The headlight system has been rebuilt with new vacuum canisters and hose kit. New rear fiberglass leaf spring (I have the original as well). Air cleaner, valve covers, intake manifold, carburetor, exhaust manifolds and radiator all appear to be original to the car. I even have the tank sticker! Please email or call with any questions. (508)776-7332 - SOLD!!!

I thought that too.....but it was a very rare option in '68 and have verified through a few "code manuals" as such.

If you have the big book Corvette The Legend Lives On, or the bloomington gold book, the second 68 is a 427/400 coupe w 983/saddle...a very desirable and rare combination. There are cars that show up for sale red with black interiors that were originaly by the tags this color combo, so it fell out of favor once. Hopefully coming back. I do not have the vin on the car in the book

I have several cars that have been confirmed w saddle interior, and its hard to tell when the color was introduced. I have an unconfirmed spotter report that convert 1618 is a maroon/saddle car, but I am not sure if the car was restored to those colors or wore them originally. In any case a stunning color combination. A project coupe in Louisiana #9756 has the first trim tag confirming a 983/420 interior, then 10434 984/420 and possibly 10617 red/saddle and 10914 983/420! From that point there are a few cars every so often that show up saddle. Available colors would seem to be red 974, 900 Black, White 972, 983 Green and 988 Maroon. Interestingly if you remember that flap a month or two ago regarding cars in the 11000 range showing up with "C" or third month production date body assembly tags (which should have been "G") 11170 is a project 983, 420 with a "C 12" assembly date...or Feb 12, 1968....

I believe it was offered pretty early in the run however....Is the saddle interior in the NCRS guides?

CAPERACER, would love to get vin and body tag info on that car for the file!!!!!!!

How do you run these old boys with unleaded fuel -?
For instance, if you purchased this car, and drove it 100 miles/week what would you have to do in order to avoid valve seat damage?

The notion that these old engines will suffer from valve recession from unleaded fuel is a long perpetuated myth. They run fine on unleaded 93 Octane, small or big block. My 68 427/390 runs fine on unleaded 93. My 65 350 horse was last rebuilt in 87 and I did not go for hardened valve seats. No engine related problems in 21 years on unleaded gas.

THAT IS NO MYTH!!!! The very car I own in my icon picture burnt a valve for not using leaded fuel. Its a very original '69 427/390. The first time the heads were off the car is when I replaced the burnt valve in 1993. When I first bought the car in 1992 I also beleived it was BS that I could not run unleaded. I have (had) several small block with much higher compression and ran unleaded not understanding the valves need the lead to seat properly. But sure enough as soon as I put unleaded in I burnt a valve. The car would also ping terribly on super unleaded. Of course you could back off the timing to help with that problem but it would not feel the same. Went back to Cam2 or VIP and never had the problem again. I didn't want to redo the heads with hardened seats because I wanted it as original as possible. But it is true, these engines need the lead. Especially the big blocks. I know of a few guys that have had no problems with small blocks but it doesn't make sense as size of engine should not have anything to do with valves needing lead. But my cars problem was because of the non leaded fuel.

I would love to see pics of this car. If I was looking I would snap it up in a heartbeat. [had to self edit to delete a rant]. Anyone remotely looking for a vette will be kicking themselves when this one is gone.

Looking forward to the pics

My question came from the problems I had with a 70 351C-4V in my Cougar (without posi-no less) that ate more than one valve on super unleaded, and an old 67 Mustang straight 6 I ahd in college with the same issue, until I had the head rebuilt in 1990 with hardened seats.
