Which cylinder heads do you have?
I was browsing through the GM Goodwrench Performanc Parts Catalog and found some Fast Burn alum heads that are a bolt-on 30 hp for a ZZ4. So now I'm drooling for them. :yesnod:
I'm curious to know who's using which heads.
Here are the fast-burn ones: https://www.spoperformanceparts.com/store/catalog/Product.jhtml?PRODID=680&CATID=671
Anyone else drooling yet?

This head can be used on any 1958-99 283-400ci small block Chevrolet V8 engine with conventional water flow design...
The name "Fast Burn" refers to the head's ability to quickly and completely burn the air fuel mixture, resulting in higher cylinder pressures and more power.
This head is a bolt-on 30 hp increase when used on our ZZ4 crate engine. When tested on a 383 ci small block engine with 9.5 to 1 compression ratio and .540" lift roller cam, single plane intake manifold and 750 cfm Holley carburetor, the Fast Burn heads produced 497 hp at an incredibly low 5800 rpm.

Ddecart,
I have a set of ported world sporsman II heads. They are good heads, but I wouldn't buy them again.
I think that there are really only two ways to go. Either get the Vortec heads (which probably flow better than the fastburn heads) or get some AFR heads. The Vortecs are great heads and dirt cheap at $400. The AFR's are consistently the best heads, but kind of pricey at $1,100, but well worth the $$. If you really want to make great HP, the AFR's are the best and they really aren't that expensive if you figure HP per $$. Every dyno test I have seen has shown these to be the best performing heads. I wish I had known more when I bought my sportsman II's.

Was seroiusly considering the AFR heads. was about a $500 premium over the RPM's and would have taken 6-8 weeks to get. So, ended up with the RPM heads.
But, my builder does not put them on stock. They get them bare from Edelbrock then pocket port, valve job, stainless Ferrea valves, Comp Cams springs, etc. So, overall, I am pretty happy.

I've been considering new heads for quite some time. I'm considering replacing the Performer RPM with the Performer Air Gap since my cam is kind of weak and HP peaks at 4500. No point in having the RPM and dealing with hood clearance if the cam won't produce the power where the RPM helps. I'll probably get heads (still undecided on brand) and intake and then gasket match them before installing. Then I'll have a Performer RPM for sale, cheap. Of course, that's a year or so away so I have a lot of thinking to do. I was thinking Sportsman II's until I read this thread. I'm sure I'll post a question just before buying.

I'm running stock right now. But I'm leaning towards the Vortecs. For the performance level I'm looking for, and the money, these heads can't be beat.

You need a different intake manifold if you get vortec's, right? Just checking to be sure.

Well,
From the poll I guess i am the only person with Fast burns. They are OK, but I seriously doubt i would buy them again!
New intake and should have new headers to match exhaust port locations. I am some what convinced that you need a roller cam similar to the Hot cam to see their potential.
I think i would get Dart alum.

I've had vortec heads for about 2 years. Easy swap too. Just need to install the correct cam for my setup, and I should be good to go.

Jim 73,
I am curious and have been asking alot of questions concerning HP & Torque loss through the drive train. I noticed in your signature you list both fly wheel & rear wheel numbers. How where they determined? Engine & Chassis Dynos?
Thanks,
Bud

I'm using the GM fastburn heads with the GM hot cam and 1.6 roller rockers, and custom made headers to fit the raised exhaust ports and am very pleased , will be going to the 1/4 mile shortly. I would expect high 12 to low13s.

I've said this before and I'll say it again to help any Corvette enthusiast who is interested in buying new heads. Pro Action, AFR and Dart Pro 1's are the best small block Chevy heads going these days. AFR is probably the leader in the 23 degree area while Pro Action makes the wild 14 degree that has revolutionized the drag and circle track scene.
