Build Sheet ?
 

I found this folded and tucked into one of the trailing arms on my vette some years ago. Is this the build sheet?

Yep!! Major score!! Protect it as well as you can, it may add value to the collectability of the car in the future!!

If that's your build sheet the last 3 of your car's vin #'s should be hand written on it somewhere in ink.

I have 2 build sheets for my 68 Bonneville and one for a Ventura wagon which somehow found its way into my Bonnie.
None for my Vette unfortunately. :cry My build sheets have the vehicle VIN printed across the top and you should be able to see this. The hand written number is a production number and can match the last 3 digits of the VIN, be 500 out or not match at all.

Whoa...cool! :) It shows the dealer where it was originally shipped to and what the customer ordered - xxx - Although I don't see any Xs. Good eye - what were you doing? Dusting inside the trailing arms??? :lol:

And your car is an L-48 auto with gymkhana.....pretty different.
Most gymkhana cars were either 4 speeds or L-82's....
Car number 38185 and it looks like a '76.....

Thanks for the information on the build sheet, I wasnt sure if that was it or not, as I was under the assumption that it should have been on the gas tank (which I havent had down). The sheet matches the original window sticker which I have also. We saved everything when we bought the car even the key knockouts. It is a 76 I did not realize the Gymkhana susp was sort of rare on an L48. I have kept the car as original as possible with the exception of some normal replacement parts.

I found my build sheet under the carpet in the back of my 74 when I went to install new. :cheers:

Looks like a dealer window sticker..maybe? Have not seen an early c3 build sheet yet..usually in the 70's is what I have seen..similar to the original poster's build sheet.

Were the trailing arms on or off the car when you found it? Which side?

I was able to get a copy of the build sheet from the factory on my '82 but would like to recover the one that is on the car but can't seem to find it.

I was able to remove the one from above the gas tank on my other '82 without dropping the tank. It came off in several large pieces. I placed it on top of a copy of the build sheet provided by the factory and laminated them together...made for a nice page in my Vette book.

Mine was in the right side trailing arm the trailing arm was off the car at the time I found it. But from what I have read on the forum it seems the people have found the build sheets almost anywhere on the car. mostly on the gas tank.

A copy was glued to the gas tank as the chassis moved down the "chassis" line. The body had not been married to the chassis (body drop) yet. But owners have also found build sheets in other locations such as yours as well as in the dash, under the carpet and up in shock towers! This is the DNA of your car and you can reconcile the codes on the build sheets back to the car...assuming the original tags and codes are still in place. Nice car and great paint! The build sheet indicates interior as "doeskin" if I'm reading it correctly.

I constructed a "build sheet template" I share with owners in exchange for a copy of their build sheet. It lists each box number and what the preprinted sheet shows as the box contents. Its helpful when you can read the code but can't read what the preprinted information says. Drop me a note if interested! Nice find!

Let me know if you ever find it! I have a theory that the build sheet you get from the museum for 81 and later Corvettes is not complete and a copy used to build the car has additional information...which can only be confirmed by having BOTH and studying them. But you might be able to do it by comparing the two you have...let me know what you find.

Again...another nice copy. Before 73, the copy glued to the tank was the Corvette Order Copy". This is portrait style. Early build sheets were produced for each of the two major assembly lines...body/trim and chassis. These are rare and few have been recovered. After 73, the factory combined the two build sheets, forming the landscape version as shown by Tom's 76 and glued a copy of it to the tank.

This is the Corvette Order Copy...the shipper's copy references shipper information along with the destination charges and the final cost.

But again...this is documentation that shows the original configuration for your Corvette. The "317" is the body build number, a series of numbers used when the body was being built. It was the way the body shop kept up with body panels before assembly and the number was written on the build sheet to reconcile back to the Order Copy. The body shop would start over with "1" once they got to 500. Rarely did this number reconcile with the VIN. Owners have also found a second set of numbers (a set of three) that does reference the last three digits of the VIN...I suspect the 317 is the body build number.

Just out of curiosity, how much does it really hurt the value of cars like mine and Eddie70's who do not have the build sheets for their Vettes? In reality, the people with documentation are quite lucky. Most of the original buyers of these cars looked at this stuff as just a bunch of papers--come on, how many people saved all the paperwork from their first lawnmower?

I was lucky enough when I bought my '77 last month to have
gotten the build sheet, window sticker, and even the Dealer
Order Form. I bought the car from the original owner and he said
the build sheet was under the seat one day when he had the seat
out, and since he "ordered" the car, his salesman gave him the
Dealer Order Form.
In the back of the car also was the original box which holds all
the stuff to attach the tops to the luggage rack. I opened the box
to see what it was...... I guess that wasn't too smart....
If anyone has interest in seeing any of the stuff, I can scan it and
e-mail it to anyone...
Also, this stuff is only going to be important until Chevrolet works
out how to release the info. on the St.Louis cars which according
to another thread has been found....
