power steering hose size?

Recently blew a power steering hose (high pressure hose from pump to control valve) and ordered a replacement ac Delco part. It arrived and I've found it won't fit as the pipe at the pump end is too small a diameter flare to fit the outlet on the pump. OD of the actual pipe is 5/16 which smaller than the 3/8 original. Is it the replacement or the pump outlet that is likely to be wrong? System is a 69 N40 conversion I think.

I think the hose you have is packaged wrong try another brand if possible or order one from a corvette parts vender all C3 PS pressure hoses were 3/8''.

The type of fitting changed late in production, You have the earlier style.

Return it in exchange for the correct hose....

These are the part numbers for the Corvette pressure hose assemblies:

1968 - 79 Small Block 3826277 (or possibly Saginaw 7809129)
Pump - 3/8 inch diameter tubing, 5/8-18 UNF male nut, 45 degree inverted flare
Control Valve - 1/4 inch diameter tubing, 7/16-24 NS male nut, 45 degree inverted flare

1980 - 82 Small Block 7834409
Pump - 3/8 inch diameter tubing, 16x1.5mm male nut, formed tubing with o-ring
Control Valve - same as 3826277

1968 - 74 Big Block 3878886 (or possibly Saginaw 7809490)
Pump - same as 3826277 (bends in pipe different)
Control Valve - same as 3826277

Big Blocks and Small Blocks used the same power steering pump through the years.

Power steering pumps switched to metric discharge fittings and pump fasteners the 1980 model year (note, the BB was no longer in production at that time). However, these metric fastener pumps will bolt right into the 1975 thru 1979 SB Vettes as well. Note that the pulley and pump driveshaft switched to a interference fit connection in 1975. You will have to obtain the 7834409 hose assembly if you use a post 1980 pump in your 1975 thru 1979 SB Vette.

Since the Big Block went out of production after 1974 there never was a pressure hose for the BB with a M16x1.5 metric nut and o-ring pump connection. You will have to fabricate your own pressure hose assembly (and find a pulley) for a BB application if you try to use a post 1980 pump in your older Vette.

The low pressure return line hose was the same for all Vettes 1968 through 1982. It was 3826278 (or possibly Saginaw 7809489)
Control Valve - 3/8 inch diameter tubing with a 5/8-18 UNF, male nut and a 45 degree inverted flare.

I hope that I haven't confused people with the above descriptions.
Good luck,
Jim

Thanks for all the responses with the great info. Definitly looks like someone in Mexico put the wrong part in the right box that day. Now that I have confirmation on the sizing it should be (and not just that my car is a bit different then normal) I can call up the vendor and hope they have another in stock. Original and replacement part pic below.

Most parts stores can handle that problem without any errors...Hoses are specific to a model year and just give them the information and you will be taken care of ....unless there has been a wrong year pump substituted for the correct year ...'a note, there are special fittings available to correct the improper fitting....not all stores will have them ..but there out there as we sold them...

The brand we sold was .'Omega' power steering hoses and fittings

Ok so I think I am on the right track with this hose now. Thanks Jim for your info. That part number 3826277 looks to be right size when I look at it on the Corvette Central website. This appears to be mildly different to the AC Delco# 36352490 (GM #19146718, other part #70239) that the local supplier listed and supplied and that the RockAuto website listed as stock for the car, which I can definitely confirm is too small to fit the flare on the outlet from the pump.
