Where do I get the L-82 cam? Is there an aftermarket or is it GM reissue? Could I get the particulars on these? Is the Summit 224 cam close?

The GM 3896962 cam is a great choice, however one thing I might suggest is advancing it four degrees. The duration at .050" lifter rise is 224/224 compared to 221/221 for the L-79 cam. The '962 cam points of maximum lift are 114/114 versus 110/118 for L-79, so it's effectively retarded. Low end torque can be enhanced with a slight loss of top end power by advancing it 4 degrees to achieve the same indexing as L-79.
Sealed Power, Federal Mogul, Melling, Crane all offer the GM 3896962 (L82 cam). The Summit kit 1104K isn't close, the peak lift centerlines aren't the same. |
Thanks, Scott, That is the info I was after.

Actually the LT-1 370HP rating was done with the 1969 motor that had a 30-30 grind camshaft in it andf not the dual pattern "LT-1" camshaft that was actually installed in the 1970-72 LT-1 Vette. I don't like either camshaft for the LT-1 motor in a modern rebuild. Stay around 240 degrees duration @0.050 lift and around 0.525 lift and you will have a great running LT-1 motor. I would go a solid roller cam if you have the money for one with the problems we are seeing with todays oil mixtures.

GM 3849346 solid cam is known as the 30/30 cam not to be confused with the Duntov cam because very often you hear someone say I have a Duntov 30-30 cam which is actually much different. The 30-30 was used in 327-365HP Corvettes and Z-28 302 Camaros. It has specs of 254/254 .485"/.485" on a 114 LSA.
