Body shops usually do a fairly good job at matching paint, even though it isn't perfect. Since the damaged area isn't too big, I'd just do that. A several thousand dollar paint job might increase your insurance premiums.

Find a paint shop that has digital readers, should be able to match existing paint at any age, new or old paint. If they have the right equipment it should be no problem, to get an almost perfect match to the same as it is now.

I would think , being its something (the vette) that your not going to be trading in for something new in a few years, then get the whole thing done right. you'll be up set if in a few years you have to explain to everyone each time you take her out why the paint doesn't match. I just had a 10k claim on my statefarm, no increase. beside this is why we pay for full coverage.

IMHO

I installed a new Truflex front bumper on my 73 over the winter. Paint is silver and was done in 1980, the guy I used for the front bumper paint used my gas lid to do a computer match and its pretty close to an exact match.
Do your research and I'm sure you can find someone who can do a real good job at matching it up.

The way I understand it, the proper way to paint a section is to "feather" the paint in. You start behind the repaired area and go past the area as well. This creates an optical illusion and tricks the eye.

I would think a good shop could do a spot repair with base coat and blend into the fender and then clear the entire fender.

Yeah, I would go out of pocket on a "my fault" mistake. Never know, something could happen next month that isn't your fault and insurance can drop you like a rock. They are all shiesty like that.

Correct, they have to blend the paint. It can be done for sure.

I think then... the shop's don't know how to properly blend base. If they use "Color Blender", they can blend any base including metallics as long as it's close to the original color of the car.

Those color matching computer's just match your color to a catalog of color's programed into it's memory. They will give you a bendable color. Close but not exact. You would see the difference if they just painted the panel next to the unpainted panel. It's up to the painters' skill's to blend the repair properly.

I'm surprised how many shop's (painter's) just fog in the base thinking it'll be an acceptable repair and leave it at that. There's much more to it than that.

Default paint

Paint job is about 12 years old

Both shops said paint is in incredible condition for age but honestly I dont know if its a base coat clear coat or not,

The guy doing my machine work runs also owns a paint and body shop and told me if im gonna go the patch route out of pocket expense he will do it for 500 bucks.

I trust him to do the machine work I try and send as much work to his shop as possible and no I do not get compensation but I do get things done cheaper, so if insurance wants to jerk me around I may just pay out of pocket.

either way I will update with pictures of what ever I decide

Yellow seems to be a bizarre color to match. I replaced the bumpers on my '75 which had the original Code 56 yellow paint (25 years old at the time) and brought the car to a reputable body shop to have them painted. On a sunny day, the match was absolute perfection and I couldn't be any happier. On a cloudy day, it looked 3 shades off and noticeable from any distance.
I was satisfied as I only drove it on nice days but if it was a new car or show car, it would not have been acceptable.

If the insurance company is willing to pay for a complete paint job, I'd do it.

To get it to look right. I would repair the area, then blend the yellow into the original, then clear the whole back.
