Did your Vette have factory side pipes? If it did I would go with some Headman headers for factory side exhaust. I run Hooker Super Comp under the car headers on my 72 LT-1 but several people are complaining about quality of the Hookers now so, I can't really vouch for them now and you do lose some ground clearance with them. Headers will add about 20-25HP to a LT-1 motor, this is real "seat of the pants" feeling HP yopu will have over stock manifolds.

I run a set of ported 65 Fuelly rams horns on my wife's 70 LT-1 roadster because I want a stock appearing motor in that car (and low manitenance) the pipe system is a Corvette Central RPO N-11 "off road" set-up with 64-65 2.5" diameter front head pipes feeding the mufflers.

If your Vette is a true LT-1, the only aluminum radiator LT-1's were ZR-1 packages. They had the L-88 big core aluminum radiator. If you do have the big core L-88/ZR-1 style radiator, I would start checking to see if you have gotten lucky and possibly have a ZR-1 car, if you do, you need to keep the radiator original.

I run one of Tom Dewitts aluminum direct replacement radiators on my 72 LT-1, the fit and cooling performance are very good (all the foam seals are new from Dr Rebuild too and help quite a bit with the proper performance of the system.) I also run Edelbrock water pumps on all my motors, keeps them cool even on 100+degree days. The LT-1 plastic fan shroud has been discontinued from GM for some time now and they fetch a pretty decent price but, if you look hard enough you should be able to come up with one for a decent price (around $100.)

Changing radiators will require you to swap in a new radiator support as the copper/brass LT-1 radiators had saddle mounts on the side tanks where the aluminum ones have the rubber doughnuts to retain the radiator from below. Supports aren't cheap and I hear the reproduction ones don't fit really well.

I would probably stick with the aluminum radiator but definatley go with a DeWitts (if yours is showing signs of corrosion failure) because they cool better than any of the others (Griffin, BeCool and others.) The DeWitts radiators are made from original Harrison tooling and are very well built.

    Hi Eric,
I have read some of your posts and I can see that you are the go - to - guy for LT-1 questions. I have a 1971 I'll send you some pics. It is a low mileage car. I have the engine apart because the timing sprocket shed some of its nylon and I could hear the chain hitting the cover. Once I started pulling it apart , I decided this would be a good time to address some of the details on the car. It has less than 36,000. It had side pipes and headers on it. I changed it back to cast manifolds. Now that I have it apart I am thinking of some hi temp coated headers . I am considering Hedman Elites. I don't have the AIR system and when I start pricing the stuff I get to thinking the headers will look nicer, sound better , and give it more power. What headers do you recommend. Plans for the car , shows and vintage drag racing. The car has a 4.10 rear.
I have the oil pan off of the car. I intend to paint and reseal everything. The car came with an Aluminum radiator. I didn't know they didn't come that way and I bought a steel shroud and another aluminum expansion tank for it. I am thinking of buying the correct radiator and shroud for the car. The question is this would you bother going from aluminum to the copper brass and plastic shroud or detail and keep what I already have. It is the same setup as the ZR-1 , but not correct for my car. Thanks for your opinions, and time. Joe
