Re: Best 12-inch sub? (01redcoupe)
Actually there is no such thing, you have to choose one based on characteristic you are looking for-Sound Quality, Ability to Play Loud or How Low Can it Go. The other thing to look for is how it will behave in the size and type of enclosure your car can accomodate. Stick with companies that are Speaker companies not electronics companies, they typically will make a better product because that's their specialty. Radio makers like Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer, Clarion etc should be avoided. You should be prepared to spend anywhere from $199.00 - $999.00 for a quality 12" Woofer that will handle gobs of power, be more durable and actually reproduce low frequencies accurately. Then you have to pay for a quality enclosure to be installed.
Most important make sure you have a quality amplifier capable of driving the woofer you choose. It's better to have more power than not enough.
Hope this helps.... :D

From your id I assume you have a C5. you'll have some difficulty fitting a 12 in there easily and keeping stock look. If you're willing to give up some space, then it's doable. Otherwise, Illusion Audio has the only 12 that'll flush mount into the rear center. If mounting and airspace aren't a concern, I'd check out Audiomobile's MASS series, they're incredible. SPL and SQ, believe it or not. It's basically an SQ sub with record excursion, for SPL. I have one of the Illusion 12s, haven't put it in the car yet.

Bullitt and Sam Both have good answers but lets put things in perspecitive. Look at how much you want to spend. Under $250, 250-500, or $500+ for the sub without box, amp, crossover, wire, etc. Installing a 12" sub in a car will cost about $1,000 if the cost of just the sub is about $250 if you include everything. A $1,000 sub will need about $3,000 to do it justice. I rate Rock Fosgate as a decent under $250 sub with JBL and MTX rounding out the group. Next level we're talking Boston Pro, A/D/S, Soundstream Reference, and the next level again Focal, Autobahn, etc. I have a Boston and I am very happy. Its powered by 300w continuous and crossed over at 200hz in a sealed box. It will blow out my ears at full so I have to stand outside the car and use the remote to turn it up higher. It also warps the rear deck of the convertable when the top is down with each thump.
Hope this helps

Re: Best 12-inch sub? (92TripleBlack)
BTW - the size of the magnet has nothing to do with the quality nor power handling of the sub
I would like to hear other's systems and compare to my $35 sub I got on Ebay. I'm not ashamed of it's price 'cause it sounds fine by my ears - and that's what counts.
Listen to some 12"ers at stores and compare.

Re: Best 12-inch sub? (Bullitt)
Model = PYM1278
12" PRO SUBWOOFER W/70 OZ. MAGNET
- 12" PRO SUBWOOFER
- 8 OHMS IMPEDANCE
- POLY COATED PAPER CONE
- STAMPED STEEL BASKET
- 70 OZ. MAGNET
- 400 WATTS RMS/1000 WATTS PEAK
- FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 55HZ - 5KHZ
That's the one. It sells for around $69.99. I think there are many subs for around that price and I am tickled pink at this one. Actually I am thinking of getting 2 of these for my PC stereo system (for mp3's)
